Duke Recognizes Extraordinary Volunteers

Charles A. Dukes

Charles A. Dukes

The Charles A. Dukes award, named after the first director of Alumni Affairs and a longtime Duke volunteer, was established in 1982 to recognize individuals for outstanding volunteer service. Each year, nominations are submitted by staff in the Alumni Affairs and Annual Fund offices and approved by their respective boards. This prestigious award has been presented to nearly 300 volunteers, and the university is proud to introduce the 2008-09 Charles A. Dukes Award winners:

2008-09 WINNERS

"I am delighted to have this chance to bring my professional experience in working with Duke undergraduates in service-learning to the formation of Duke Alums Engage, which will continue to reach out to young Duke alums and to their communities through these local partnerships! As a third-generation Duke woman (grandmother '11, mother '35), I've seen how dear old Duke is an alma mater that continues to thrive through our efforts to enrich and sustain it."

"Volunteering for Duke at the Nasher Museum of Art is a stimulating experience. It keeps me young, inspired, and thinking creatively. I find it a place of new and exciting ideas with upbeat positive people. It provides an opportunity to make new friendships and become artistically enriched. It is good for my soul."

"I don't feel like a volunteer at all. I just want to remain a part of the university that will always hold a special place in my heart. As a student, I was enriched by the experiences Duke gave me. As an alumnus, I have continued to feel a draw to remain connected with my alma mater. When I had the opportunity to move to Hong Kong with my wife, Marcia, I was overwhelmed to find how the Duke spirit extends around the world. It is palpable! It is a particular honor to represent Duke to potential students and their parents from this part of the world, and then to continue to know these young Dukies as they progress through the university and become alumni themselves. Duke has never stopped giving me opportunities to grow each year."

"I am a true 'product' of Duke and thank the university for making my life as rich as it is. I was one of the North Carolinians lucky enough to be accepted at Duke and that was the beginning of my education in every sense of the word. Since I stepped onto campus until now, Duke has always allowed me to spread my wings and has always pushed me to do more. Because of the Duke Public Policy Studies Department, I secured my first internship and subsequently my first job, both at CNN. Because of my Duke friends, I moved 'up North' to NYC and then met other Dukies who became an integral part of my life in New York, helping me create a lifelong network of business contacts and friendships. Because of my time spent on campus and volunteering for Duke after graduating, I've gained an invaluable education – in the work I've done and the diverse people with whom I've come into contact. Duke helped shape my interests, my morals, my beliefs, my strengths, and my capabilities. For all these reasons, I will always give back to Duke, not just in monetary terms but with my time – and my heart."

"I am most grateful and appreciative of my education at Duke University. In the years since my graduation I have come to recognize fully the profound affect that my Duke undergraduate experience has had on my personal and professional development and growth. I volunteer for Duke as an expression of my gratitude to the university. My commitment to Duke is life-long; I want to support the university in every way that I can to help ensure its continuing and future success in educating and inspiring Duke students."

"I have always believed that it is important to support our nation's educational institutions, and especially Duke University, which has provided me with many professional and personal growth opportunities over the past 30 years. It has been a great thrill for me to participate in the growth of this great institution and to meet so many interesting and intelligent people who are part of the Duke 'family'."
